Important Guidance Regarding the Social Media Phenomenon "Italian Brainrot"
Dear Parents/Carers,
You may be aware of a recent global social media phenomenon known as "Italian Brainrot". In common with many other schools, both locally and nationally, we have experienced children quoting content and phrases from this trend.
While the phrases and imagery associated with this content now appear to be nonsensical, we must bring your attention to the somewhat darker background. On further investigation, the phenomenon has disturbing racist and misogynistic roots, much of which is extreme.
Although some content creators have manipulated the original material to make it more appealing to children, there are significant concerns that the racism and misogyny may still be present in a coded way. The children seem to be accessing an AI-generated more sanitised version, but the troubling roots remain, and some of the content is still dependent on racist undertones.
We urge everyone to be sensitive to this phenomenon and urge you to be vigilant with the content your children are accessing online. I also wanted to make you aware of how the school will manage the use of this content:
1. If we feel that the words and songs are being targeted to cause racist or religious offence, we will treat it as a discrimination incident.
2. If we find that the words and songs are being directed, even in innocence, at someone who has asked for that not to happen, we will manage it as a breach of our behaviour rules and values.
We acknowledge that we cannot fight or keep out a global phenomenon like this, only manage it as best we can.
To help you understand this issue more fully, we recommend the following external resources:

Thank you for your cooperation and support on this matter as we continue to work together to navigate the complexities of online trends and ensure a safe, inclusive environment for all children.
Yours sincerely
